In view of the drastic change in the needs and wants of the population, Italian suburbs must be re-thought. Indeed, buildings constructed during the post war period (after the Second World War) were mainly responding to the basic need of granting the population a safe house; the aesthetic features of edifices and of urban space actually contribute to enhance both their value and the individual’s satisfaction. Unluckily, it is not possible to ameliorate the periphery’s buildings – rendering them more suited to this new societal interest in quality - without a drastic intervention: being some of the edifices already compromised, a process of demolition and reconstruction will be sometimes necessary. Regaining those hidden values - which are linked with the very specific characteristics of this kind of construction - is the only way to accomplish the difficult task of reconstruction, with the aim of creating value without bearing costs. Moreover, to be successful, a wide participation is required: a coordinated and shared action will lead to the re-acquisition of the area’s “venustas”.
