Italy and the Balkan Wars represents an emblematic work based on the military fonts for scientific aims, an important contribution to the vast program of research and valorization of the documents of the Italian officials who were engaged, in different positions, in the Balkan area, which after the end of the 19th century became an area of particular interest for Italian foreign policy. Italy, in its turn, for the Balkan political elites was a model for the realization of the national unity, an example to imitate and follow for the emergent national states. In the period from the Congress of Berlin to World War I, Italian officials - military officers, members of the committees for the demarcation of borders, experts and delegates at international conferences, staff serving in foreign armies - were particularly active in the region, offering their technical and organizational expertise in the process of redefining the politics of the area, which was made difficult by the strong contras
"L'Italia e le guerre balcaniche" rappresenta un lavoro emblematico di impiego delle fonti militari a fini scientifici, un importante contributo al vasto programma di ricerca e valorizzazione dei documenti prodotti dagli ufficiali italiani impegnati, a vario titolo, nell'area balcanica, che dalla fine del XIX secolo diventa un'area di particolare interesse per la politica estera italiana. L'Italia, a sua volta, è stata per le élites politiche balcaniche un modello per la realizzazione dell'unità nazionale, un esempio da imitare e da seguire per gli emergenti Stati nazionali. Nel periodo dal Congresso di Berlino alla Prima guerra mondiale, gli ufficiali italiani - addetti militari, membri delle commissioni per la delimitazione dei confini, esperti e delegati ai convegni internazionali, personale in servizio presso gli eserciti stranieri - sono particolarmente attivi nella regione offrendo la loro esperienza tecnica e organizzativa nel processo di ridefinizione politica dell'area, resa problematica dagli accesi contrasti fra nazionalità. Il settore balcanico, in sede militare italiana, va così assumendo progressivamente la denominazione di scacchiere orientale.
