In terms of volumes of space and constructional evidence, the crypt constitutes the best conserved component of the medieval cathedral. The ample dimensions and rigorous oratorio configuration in a succession of modules voulted with numerous reused colums, the elegant decorative effects created both with the inclusion of capitals, pilastres and reused bases and with the array of new sculptural material are all elements that have prompted a series of studies. As a result, the most significant stages in the building and subsequent modifications of the cathedral have been defined, pointing up the specific architectural values, which are moreover shared by various other crypts in the region of Viterbo. Nevertheless, a few questions remain to be anwered regarding the original configuration of the building and, indirectly, the rationale behind the substequent transformations, as well as the significance of the choice made in creating these extensive hall crypts. The attempt is made to offer a new answer to these questions, above all on the basis of close direct obsevation, rereading of the existing documentary evidence, and analysis of the various compatable buildings, especially in central Italy.

Abstract
The attempt is made to offer a new answer to these questions, above all on the basis of close direct obsevation, rereading of the existing documentary evidence, and analysis of the various compatable buildings, especially in central Italy.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
