Language, race, nation in the Italian culture from the late 18th century to the 1850s

This paper illustrates the relationship between linguistic ideas and the studies on ethnicity and races in the Italian culture of the XIXth century. The semantics of concepts such as 'race', people', nation' are discussed in reference to authors such as Romagnosi, Leopardi, Biondelli and others. Special attention is payed to the eminent thinker and educator Carlo Cattaneo, who upheld a genuine pluralistic view of the alleged language-race connection and, in so doing, distanced himself from the racialist tendencies of his day, in Germany, France and elsewhere.

Il saggio indaga le connessioni fra dibattito linguistico e dibattito etnico-nazionale in Italia durante il XIX secolo, grosso modo fino al 1860. Il tema è studiato anche con riferimento alle accezioni correnti di termini quali 'razza', 'popolo', 'nazione' in autori quali Romagnosi, Leopardi, Biondelli. Particolare attenzione è rivolta al grande pensatore e educatore Carlo Cattaneo che nella sua variegata opera offre una visione originalmente pluralistica del (supposto) rapporto lingua-nazione, distanziandosi profondamente dalle tendenze razzistiche emergenti nel mondo tedesco e francese (oltre, naturalmente, che negli Stati Uniti).
