What is contemporary politics? How and why its forms are changing? How is it interpreted by sociology and the other social sciences? The text analyses relationships between politics (as well as polity and policy) and the economic and cultural spheres and the transformations affecting the relationships between markets and the state, public policies, political parties, social movements, representative democracy, participation, the role of knowledge, public administrations, new political spaces on the urban and trans-national scales of governance. Examples concerning Italian and European cases are provided. Both historical changes and those theories that have explained them are interpreted critically and from a historical perspective, taking into account the transition from the liberal-democratic Keynesian Welfare State to the post-democratic and post-national politics of neo-liberalism, up to the current global crisis.
