The book aims at critically examining Brazilian historiographical rules by reconsidering the whole liter-ary history of the huge Latin-American country and the persistence, in the national consciousness, of some important “figures”. The starting point is the analysis of the different historiographical proposals, which have been developed in the scope of post-colonial culture, as well as the elaboration of a different methodological approach to Brazilian literary discourse and path. Thereafter the volume examines some recurring figures (such as the island, the indigenous, the forest, the sertão, the border, the urban imagi-nary, and so on), that characterize that historical-cultural universe, often with a multi-centuries duration. Those figures, separately or closely connected, represent therefore the real load-bearing axis of a literary writing, which chooses them as the very subject of its artistic practice.
