Italian Books of Hours and Prayer Books in the Fourteenth Century

The essay is based on a suvey of over sixty Italian Books of Hours produced between the first decade of the 14th and the first decades of the 15th century (listed in the appendix). This is the first wide range analysis of this type of devotional book, until recently considered a specifically transalpine product, totally absent in the Italian context. Various decades of investigation by the author, have enabled her to reconstruct an absolutely new map of the spreading of this book, spanning all through the peninsula, from North to South, and ranging from the aristocratic production for the courts connected with France and England, to the examples for current use, strongly linked to Franciscan spirituality and to the practices of the confraternities

Il saggio si basa un censimento di oltre sessanta libri d’ore italiani, prodotti tra il primo decennio del XIV e i primi del XV secolo (pubblicati in appendice). Si tratta della prima analisi di ampio raggio della produzione in Italia di un tipo di libro devozionale fino a poco fa considerato un prodotto specificamente transalpino e del tutto assente nel contesto italiano. Le ricerche pluridecennali dell’autrice le hanno permesso di ricostruire una mappa del tutto nuova della diffusione di questo libro attraverso la penisola, da Nord a Sud, prendendo in considerazione sia la produzione aristocratica per le corti legate alla Francia e all’Inghilterra, sia gli esempi per uso comune, fortemente legati alla spiritualità francescana e alle pratiche delle confraternite.
