Peasant and tribal movements in colonial Bengal: A historiographical overview

The article provides a historiographic overview on peasant and tribal movements in Bengal during the colonial periodposure to Britishh rule rsulted in different lines of development to the tribal community in comparison to the peasantry. Hence, these two categories are treated separately in this essay as the tribal and peasant movements occurred in vastly different contexts, despite certain similarities.The article demonstrates that recent research on colonial Bengal dispels the notion that peasant and tribal rebellions in India were insignificant or localised events in comparison with the experience of medieval Europe and China. In fact, the historical significance of the Subalternist intervention is the focus it brought to rebel peasant consciousness and the complexities within the world of tribals and peasants.
