This paper analyses changes in the relationship between non-tribal outsiders and tribal indigenes in Singhbhum district of colonial Bengal. The influx of outsiders increased sharply during this period. They increasingly acquired power over the tribal people and became their new oppressors. Paradoxically, while the outsiders were resented and distrusted, they also became essential in the regional economy.
