ARBËRESHE TOPONYMY AND IDENTITY HYBRIDISM. – The paper The Arbëreshe place names and their hybrid identity considers first of all the historical settlements of Arbëreshë in Southern Italy beginning from the 15th century. In particular the place names of St. Sofia d’Epiro, in Province of Cosenza, are investigated, with support of also literary evidence of other arbereshe communities in order to emphasize the literary geography in the poems of the 19th century. Some place names like Trapeza and Pillza today got faded for the continuous linguistic impoverishment of the arbërisht are brightened. But other place names, which were assimilated by the Romance culture, are identified. The Romance culture produced the hybrid identity of the place names due to the Arbëreshë, who set their mark on territory. These elements even if fade are considered by residents proper of their culture. In addition some examples of official translations into Italian or transcription of some place names are repor
