Numerous studies indicate that the purchase and consumption of goods and services help to express - but also to generate - masculinity and femininity. This depends also by the social representations, historically and culturally situated and shaped in part by advertising. In the Italy of the Fifties, for example, the need to market food, ways of living and new appliances helped to popularize a certain image of woman, distinct and independent, but also tied to the traditional role of housekeeper, mother and wife (Passerini 1992). In the same years, advertising showed less virile male images, proposing the purchase of specific goods as necessary to acquire the status of modern man. In the last three decades, the visual codes of fashion communication spread a different male identity more feminine in appearance, manners and role. So, advertising seems a useful and interesting field of observation of the representations of gender. The relationship between women and advertising has always been tight. Commercials, posters and print ads have hosted several female figures from the start of commercial communication. Despite the differences of times and contexts, the traditional Italian representation of women has more than one point of contact with the results of the Erving Goffman’s studies (1976). Over time, however, the Italian female representations are slightly changed as a result of the evolution of women's role in society. So, considering the studies of Goffman as a theoretical basis, we analyzed the image of gender in the Italian television commercials, with the intention of assessing whether the old female identities have been replaced by new, empowered and more modern figures. The analysis (part of a larger research of the GEMMA Observatory of La Sapienza University) concerns the schedule of a rebuilt week of the six main Tv Italian networks (RAI1, RAI2, RAI3, Rete4, Canale5 and Italia 1) recorded from 8 am to 2 am. We found 9979 commercials, watched them and eliminated the repetitions from the sample. So we got 815 unique spots with 1798 characters. We analyzed them with the analysis of the content, considered as a mix between the Berelson’s "classical" approach (1952) and the analysis as investigation. Then we carried out a qualitative analysis of some case studies. The research revealed an apparent empowerment of the female figure: women are more than men, they usually appear at the beginning of the spot, they are more numerous among the protagonists and the testimonial, while men appears in the background of the scene. However, a deeper analysis indicates that the women’s images are still quite traditional: they are shown at home, in the role of housewives or mothers, guided by men’s voice and generally subordinated to male figures. The exceptions are few, and prove the old rule of a traditional view of women’s role.
