The paper presents a research progress of the “SoURCE - Sustainable Urban Cells -” project co-financed by MIUR and supported by MAE within the significant Bilateral Project of the Executive Programme on Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the Republic of Italy and the Kingdom of Sweden for the years 2010-2013. The research was jointly developed by the CITERA that works at DATA and by the KTH Institute Royal Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Built Environment, Department of Urban Planning and Environment. The research setting in simultaneously at the urban scale, at the building scale and at last at the artefact scale (mainly systems) has the objective of rationalized in terms of energy a portion of territory – the urban cell - through energy saving and by producing energy from renewable sources; through the addition of urban cells will be possible to shape a smart city that, implemented with others environmental sustainable network services, can be a “module” for the renovation of urban contexts of low quality.
