The book deals with several key tendencies in the development of modern Czech literary criticism and literary historiography at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In doing so, it describes on the interplay of esthetics, literary criticism and historical literary studies, especially in regard to the problem of realism. The interpretation of Czech literary history that was set forth by so‑called “Vlček school” (also called “positivist school” or “scientific realism school”, heavily influenced by Masaryk) remained extremely influential for a long period of time: it could be found in various degrees in virtually all the trends of the 20th century literary theory and history, from structuralism to Marxism. The proposed interpretation scheme emphasizes certain factors that were crucial in the establishing and subsequent development of literary criticism and historiography. Special attention is paid to the aesthetic and critical thought of T.G. Masaryk, F.X. Šalda, A. Novák, O. Fischer, pointing out not only specific contributions, but also useful interactions. A Czech version of the book was published in 2011 by the Faculty od Arts of Charles University in Prague.
