Three Japanese writers in three different conutry – Germany, England, United States – experienced the idea of others, as country and people, as well as the concept of themselves considered ‘other’. To live the otherness, the three writers needed to borrow, and in a way to learn, from Europe the concept of individualism, without which one can perceive the otherness as a country and not as an individual. Their experience and their novells represents a prelude to modern and contemporary trasnational japanese writers and, to use the Japanese word, to the ekkyobungaku, the “literature that exceeds the boundaries’.

Abstract

Three Japanese writers in three different conutry – Germany, England, United States – experienced the idea of others, as country and people, as well as the concept of themselves considered ‘other’. To live the otherness, the three writers needed to borrow, and in a way to learn, from Europe the concept of individualism, without which one can perceive the otherness as a country and not as an individual. Their experience and their novells represents a prelude to modern and contemporary trasnational japanese writers and, to use the Japanese word, to the ekkyobungaku, the “literature that exceeds the boundaries’.
