This volume provides a reconstruction and analysis of the knowledge and practices about health, illness and treatment of the Nahua of Mexico, from the first evidence on Aztec medicine collected by the Spaniards in the early XVI century, through the documents of the colonial era, to the ethnographic present, documented through thirty years of research in the Sierra de Puebla. It explains the Nahua’s concepts on the person and its composition, the delicate balances that govern health and the pitfalls that can cause disease. In addition, it highlights the complex array of diagnostic categories characteristic to indigenous medical tradition, as well as the therapeutic practices (combining plants, bodily manipulations and ritual acts) by which healing is pursued. The detailed examination of Nahua medicine highlights the misunderstandings that - from the very first contact with European medicine - have characterized its assessment by non-natives, and which still persist now that health care institutions have opened unprecedented spaces for collaborating with indigenous healers. Through a critical comparison of the characteristics of the different types of knowledge which co-exist in today's medical pluralism, one can better understand the reasons for the vitality and persistence of indigenous medicine.

Abstract
Through a critical comparison of the characteristics of the different types of knowledge which co-exist in today's medical pluralism, one can better understand the reasons for the vitality and persistence of indigenous medicine.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
