The article offers an anthropological examination of the question of the effectiveness of therapeutic intervention, first by considering the (culturally and socially determined) criteria for defining what different peoples consider as “illness”, the figure of the patient (sometimes conceived in supra-individual terms), and what are the object and the aims of therapeutic action. Secondly it analyses the main interpretations of the mechanisms through which the meaning of the acts and substances used in various forms of therapy can produce endogenous reactions, leading to an improvement in the patient's condition. Finally, it stresses the fact that, in many successful therapeutic actions, it is fundametal to involve the patient as an active subject in the healing process.

Abstract
The article offers an anthropological examination of the question of the effectiveness of therapeutic intervention, first by considering the (culturally and socially determined) criteria for defining what different peoples consider as “illness”, the figure of the patient (sometimes conceived in supra-individual terms), and what are the object and the aims of therapeutic action. Secondly it analyses the main interpretations of the mechanisms through which the meaning of the acts and substances used in various forms of therapy can produce endogenous reactions, leading to an improvement in the patient's condition. Finally, it stresses the fact that, in many successful therapeutic actions, it is fundametal to involve the patient as an active subject in the healing process.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
