Portugal had a long authoritarian dictatorship. Since the democratic process started the constitutional framework has been based on a semi-presidential system. The article analyses the evolution of the party system as well as the consequences of such a modification on the government structures. Findings show an increasing bipolarization of the party system towards a by-party system. The role of the president is still relevant even though the prime minister is arising as the crucial political actor.

Abstract
Portugal had a long authoritarian dictatorship. Since the democratic process started the constitutional framework has been based on a semi-presidential system. The article analyses the evolution of the party system as well as the consequences of such a modification on the government structures. The role of the president is still relevant even though the prime minister is arising as the crucial political actor.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
