Aurelio Arcadio Carisio è, con Ermogeniano, il giurista più vicino ai compilatori giustinianei, che si servirono delle sue opere in un modo altamente significativo. La lettura dei tre libri singulares del giurista offre non già la sola possibilità di verificare, seppure per piccoli squarci, l’opera, o meglio, il tentativo di complessiva sistemazione delle materie di cui si occupò, in sintonia con una parte significativa della giurisprudenza Severiana, bensì quella di valutare l’apporto personale del giurista dell’età epiclassica. Il de officio praefecti praetorio, il de muneribus civilibus, il de testibus, analizzati nell’ordine nel quale furono probabilmente pubblicati, costituiscono infatti temi di studio del tutto originali nel panorama della giurisprudenza romana. Alcuni dati testuali e più di uno spunto interpretativo inducono a ritenere che egli abbia percorso una carriera nell’alta amministrazione imperiale e, con ogni probabilità, durante il regno di Diocleziano, subito dopo l’‘epoca terribile’ degli imperatori soldati.
