The Tiburtino district developed at the end of the nineteenth century in an area east of the city of Rome and outside the Aurelian Walls. Till then it had mainly been farmland where many aristocratic Roman families had their estates, although the area also had several tuff and pozzolana quarries. It’s still possible to see some of the old roads running through the contemporary city, so together with other historical artefacts we are able to interpret the changes which took place in this area over the centuries- changes which have made it what it is today. The neighbourhood is located between the Verano cemetery, via Tiburtina, the Aurelian Walls, the Termini railway station and the San Lorenzo freight station; ever since the neighbourhood was created it has always been an isolated and independent part of the city. Before the grand, late nineteenth-century construction project, several alterations were made in the neighbourhood and surroundings which completely changed what the area looked like. These changes included the Verano complex and the tracks for the inauguration of the Rome-Tivoli railway.
Il quartiere tiburtino nasce alla fine dell’Ottocento ad oriente della città di Roma, al di fuori delle mura aureliane. Fino a quell’epoca la zona comprendeva aree ad uso agricolo con vasti possedimenti terrieri di nobili famiglie romane e numerose cave per l’estrazione del tufo e della pozzolana. Nel tessuto urbano dell'attuale quartiere è possibile riscontrare ancora alcuni antichi tracciati viari che, insieme ad altre testimonianze storiche, consentono una lettura delle trasformazioni che il territorio ha subito nel corso dei secoli fino all'attuale configurazione. Racchiuso tra il Cimitero del Verano, la via Tiburtina, le Mura Aureliane, la stazione Termini e lo scalo ferroviario di San Lorenzo, il quartiere fin dalla sua nascita ha fruito di una posizione isolata ed autonoma dal tessuto urbano della città. Prima del grande progetto edilizio della fine del secolo XIX sono stati realizzati alcuni interventi sul territorio che contribuirono a cambiare radicalmente l'identità della zona. Tra questi la costruzione del complesso del Verano e lo sviluppo delle linee ferroviarie con l'inaugurazione della tratta Roma-Tivoli. Nei primi anni del Novecento vennero eseguite opere di riqualificazione del tessuto urbano e si aprirono anche alcune piccole fabbriche, testimonianza dell'architettura industriale di inizio secolo. Il quartiere, duramente colpito dai bombardamenti della seconda guerra mondiale, si è trasformato da area suburbana a zona di collegamento tra la città intramuraria e l'espressione periferica verso l'Agro romano.
