Since the times of the Renaissance treatises on the importance of designing in architecture have stressed that the essential skill required of the architect is that is to know how to draw. Until a few years ago the drawing architecture, and hence the relationship between drawing and design, has always remained constant. Architects entered into the relationship with the design through two-dimensional media, such as a sheet of paper, or three-dimensional, such as maquettes. The architect has always used freehand sketching to visualize the ideated forms. Only when sketches are finally and definitively defined does the architect begin to represent the design through elaborate graphics drawings that enable him to realize the design unequivocally. With the birth of informatics technology in the 2000s, this process acquired the name of digital architecture.
L’importanza assunta dal disegno già a partire dai trattati rinascimentali, pone l’accento sull’indispensabile e principale abilità richiesta all’architetto e cioè quella di saper disegnare. Da sempre e fino a pochi anni or sono il disegno dell’architettura, e quindi il rapporto tra disegno e progetto, si è mantenuto costante. Gli architetti instauravano il rapporto con il progetto affidandosi a supporti bidimensionali, come il foglio di carta, o tridimensionali, come le maquettes. L’architetto ha sempre utilizzato lo schizzo a mano libera per definire in maniera immediata le forme ideate. Solo quando gli schizzi hanno raggiunto la completa definizione l’architetto passa alla rappresentazione del progetto attraverso elaborati grafici che permettono di realizzare il progetto in modo univoco. Questo fino all'avvento dell'informatica che negli anni 2000, nell’ambito delle scienze architettoniche, ha preso il nome di Architettura Digitale.
