Abstract
The year 2013 marks an important anniversary, which the Foundation was requested to provide scientific support since 2001: the seventeenth centenary of the "Edict of Milan" In fact, it allows and requires a wide-ranging reflection on the issues of religious freedom - that In 1913 a young priest from Bergamo appassionarono scholar who then retail the pastoral letter of the bishops of Lombardy and fifty years after pope would die - and even more on the figure of Constantine, both in its historical dimension and in its liturgical and refraction? political myths around him and almost touching the XXI century. The issue has always been the subject of several active sites of study in the Foundation: The Nicene born from research on the beginning of the then Centre for Documentation, 1959 to the theme of "the age of Constantine" object seminars Marie? Dominique Chenu years sixties, from the conference of which he was the unforgettable protagonist Nino Andreatta Ronald Regan and the new season "Constantinian" of the eighties, to the research of the past decade on the fate of that theme before and after Vatican II, and not least in the work of critical review of the literature provided by the magazine "Christianity in history," and the conference on the anniversary of the lessons of Momigliano the fourth century. And it was therefore easy to accept the invitation to study the subject in a more systematic proposing a partnership with the Italian Encyclopedia in 2011 which gave proof of great effectiveness. To this has been designed to provide a work that takes in three large volumes of texture encyclopedic a wide-ranging reflection on Constantine: his figure, the construction of his image, the production of myths and false, the critical discussion that has provoked , the recurrence of his model and critics, inside and outside the churches of their "breakthrough" that its legislation crown.
