The essay analyzes the Rousseau’s fortune in some emblematic figures of conservative thought and liberal, in the nineteenth century, as De Maistre and Constant, in order to show how the work and the image of the genevan writer catalyzes the criticism against the French Revolution and its inheritance, in particular in its most radical aspects. Rousseau is considered in this sense as the author stated the natural equality of men, the origin of social inequality, and the right of individuals gathered in community to political self-determination - through the common expression in the unitary will of the sovereign people - i.e. the founding father of modern democracy.
