Come si legge la satira romana?

The essay, Chapter VIII of the volume (which is attached in full as a PDF file) and specially written for it, summarizes the characteristic features of Roman satire, which can not be reduced to the image, especially related to Juvenal, of aggressive censorship. The Roman satire is interpreted as a place of critical reflection on poetry and the poets; in this the Roman satire shows to be heir of the great tradition of Greek comedy (Aristophanes, in the first place) and, in particular, of Callimachus’ Iambi. The role of Horace as master and theorist of the Roman satire (after the “inventor” Lucilius) is studied in details; the essay focuses also on the comparison between satire and epic (especially the poetic cliché of the "dream initiation"). The Roman satire is interpreted as a part of the Roman "library" and of the Roman literary culture.

Il saggio, capitolo VIII del volume (di cui si allega il PDF completo), appositamente scritto per esso, sintetizza gli aspetti caratterizzanti della satira romana, che non può ridursi all’immagine, soprattutto legata a Giovenale, di aggressività censoria. La satira romana viene interpretata come un luogo di riflessione critica sulla poesia e sui poeti, in questo erede della grande tradizione comica greca (Aristofane, in primo luogo) e, in particolare, del Callimaco dei Giambi. Viene valorizzato il ruolo di “teorico” che fu proprio di Orazio, con il fondamentale precedente di Lucilio; viene approfondito il confronto tra la satira e l’epos (in particolare per il luogo comune poetico del “sogno iniziatico”). La satira romana si rivela come parte integrante della “biblioteca” e della cultura letteraria romane.
