Return to Sender: Horace’s sermo from the Epistles to the Satires

The essay examines Horace's Epistles 1, with the aim to show the autonomy of the 'perfect' book of Epistles, in its progressive 'unfold' from one to another poem. It explains how Epistles 1 represent for the poet and his reader an opportunity for a rethinking of many issues already addressed in the Satires: editorial structure also participates in a game of so complex retrospective ('border of ten' in relation to Aristius Fuscus). His doctrinal freedom allows the poet to experience some consonance with the Socratic literature, especially the Phaedrus of Plato.

Viene esaminato il libro I delle Epistole oraziane, con l’obiettivo di valorizzarne l’autonomia di ‘perfetto’ libro poetico, nel suo progressivo ‘svolgersi’ dall’uno all’altro componimento. Si chiarisce come l’opera epistolare rappresenti per il poeta e il suo lettore l’occasione per un ripensamento di molti temi già affrontati nelle Satire: anche l’ordinamento editoriale partecipa di un così raffinato gioco retrospettivo (ad esempio il ‘confine decimale’ in relazione ad Aristio Fusco). La sua dichiarata libertà dottrinaria consente al poeta di Epistole 1 di sperimentare alcune consonanze con la letteratura socratica, in special modo il Fedro di Platone.
