The examination of the relationship between the written word and the spoken word in the Cena Trimalchionis shows itself very useful to the exegesis of the text (especially 27, 4; 29, 1; 29, 5; 71, 12). Language and culture of the freedmen reinvent and distort not only the great models of aristocratic paideia, as Homer and Virgil, but also images and iconography of classical art. In Petronius’ representation of the class of freedmen, a very significant role is played by the mimetic (or “imitative”) faculty, for which the classical culture, at least since Plato, had established rules and clear limits.
L’esame dei rapporti tra la parola scritta e la parola parlata nella Cena Trimalchionis si mostra assai utile all’esegesi del testo (in particolare 27, 4; 29, 1; 29, 5; 71, 12). Lingua e cultura dei liberti reinventano e stravolgono non soltanto i grandi modelli della paideia aristocratica, come Omero e Virgilio, ma anche immagini e iconografie dell’arte classica. Nella rappresentazione che Petronio dà del ceto dei liberti un ruolo determinante ha quella facoltà mimetica ("imitativa") per la quale la cultura classica, almeno da Platone in poi, aveva stabilito regole e limiti ben precisi.
