Premessa

This historic moment also reminds us that human development is not linear, it never was. Questo momento storico ci ricorda anche che lo sviluppo umano non è lineare, non lo è mai stato. L’illusione del progresso, della continua accumulazione di conoscenza e dell'incessante raggiungimento di traguardi sempre più alti, del dare per acquisito una volte per tutte quanto conquistato rappresenta un rischio e collide con l’evidenza empirica che si può trarre dalla storia dell’uomo. Lo sviluppo umano non è né lineare né uniforme: va difeso e arricchito continuamente e in quanto tale dovrebbe essere sentito come un bene comune dell’umanità. La maggiore sensibilità rispetto al tema dei beni comuni, di cui si può avere evidenza in Italia, ad esempio, dal successo dei referendum sull’acqua e sul nucleare, ci danno qualche speranza, anche se sembra che non basti la volontà popolare espressa a mettere al sicuro il risultato contro le istanze mercatistiche. Tale sensibilità è necessaria anche per l’impegno nello sviluppo umano, ma non sufficiente: serve anche empatia, solidarietà e capacità di immedesimarsi, soprattutto in tema di migranti.
