This work investigates the relationship between cities and their hinterland - an increasingly one-sided relationship since XIX century, determined by the needs of the city - seen from the point of view of the "weaker" partner. The analysis is focused on Rome in comparison with other urban models, both in Italy (Turin, Milan, Naples) and Europe (Paris, London, Berlin, Vienna, Madrid). It emerges the peculiarity of the Rome case, with implications for the recent institution of a "metropolitan city" local government.

Abstract
This work investigates the relationship between cities and their hinterland - an increasingly one-sided relationship since XIX century, determined by the needs of the city - seen from the point of view of the "weaker" partner. The analysis is focused on Rome in comparison with other urban models, both in Italy (Turin, Milan, Naples) and Europe (Paris, London, Berlin, Vienna, Madrid). It emerges the peculiarity of the Rome case, with implications for the recent institution of a "metropolitan city" local government.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
