Moving Ideas: ERASMUS policies

This paper considers the ERASMUS programme within the frame of the internationalisation of higher education. ERASMUS , an EU mobility programme, was one of the first student mobility programmes on a large scale. Launched as a mobility programme for study matters, it has over the years become a richly diversified programme not only for the mobility of students and academic and administrative staff, but also for further adopted projects and networks. With the Bologna process the programme experienced clear quality improvement, especially with the introduction of ECTS providing for more transparency. However, ERASMUS is still often considered a programme with only a minor impact on internationalisation. Of course, it operates only inside Europe, but its influence and reputation go far beyond. We discuss the relevant educational EU policies, the ERASMUS programme and its impact on internationalisation.
