The essay discusses the communicative role and effects of proverbs embedded within early modern English didactic dialogues, and precisely how proverbs, as written traces of an oral tradition, functioned within speech-like and/or speech-purposed written genres. The analysis will be dedicated to the presence of proverbs in John Florio’s manuals for teaching Italian, Firste Fruites (1578) and Second Frutes (1591).
