Abstract

The reference image for the project of a multifunctional center in Monte San Giovanni Campano is the symbolic one of a small urban organism which, from time to time, has its correspondences with the plans and with the “skyline” of the uphill of Valley Road. The drawing aims at a total organization of the whole side exposed to midday, which deserves an environmental restoration able to relate the total image of the town to its proper “genius loci”. Calcareous stone and basalt, from time to time, set a series of scenery of collective life: roads, squares, open spaces, flights of steps that truly are the nature of this place. The intervention has a unitary and strongly tied to philosophy drawing, images and materials of the requalification project of part of the historical center to constitute a real supplemented urban system able to appreciate and enrich the landscape character. The building of the Civic Center absorbs an existing arched fragment of a construction wall, within a space full height, creating a luminous element that contains the lift system and access to balconies. The horizontal elements of the façade-diaphragm are colored in different shades - sampled from the plasters of the existing buildings - whose finish modifies its chromatic intensity to the varying terracotta of the natural light. The landscape of the valley is the protagonist of the internal views, both glimpsed in filigree between the gaps in the mesh and framed by the square openings placed in correspondence with the windows of the internal counter-wall of the offices. For its historical vocation and for its strategic location, the area satisfies the function foreseen and provides by the Civic Center with offices and rooms for the public. Above, in direct connection with the rise to the town, the roof of the building is transformed into a fantastic panoramic terrace overlooking the entire valley.
