The article outlines some distinctive features of the Italian situation for what concerns trends and innovations in foreign language teaching at primary. First, the political aspects of language education are described, in historical terms. Then, methodological innovations in language teaching with young children are described and research on metalinguistic development of bilingual children or of children with early foreign languages experiences are presented.
