Larrea Juan Bautista was a lawyer, judge and leading member of the class of letrados the service of the monarchy in the thirties of the seventeenth century, a period marked by heavy internal problems and dominated by the figure of the favorite of Philip IV, Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares. Juan Bautista Larrea fu giurista, magistrato ed esponente di spicco del ceto dei letrados al servizio della monarchia negli anni Trenta del Seicento, un periodo segnato da pesanti problemi interni e dominato dalla figura del favorito di Filippo IV, Gaspar de Guzmán, conte-duca di Olivares. L’analisi del percorso di Larrea, questa ricerca ha inteso indagare come si intrecciassero il funzionamento degli apparati di governo e di amministrazione della giustizia e le posizioni politiche difese dagli ufficiali in essi operanti. L’esperienza di Larrea, che oltre ad operare nell’alta amministrazione, scrisse le Decisiones Granatenses e le Allegationes Fiscales, opere che ebbero ampia risonanza nel circuito del Diritto Comune, pone in luce da un lato come le posizioni sostenute dal letrado nel corso delle cause traducano una visione politica significativa della monarchia spagnola del suo tempo; dall’altro come a questa visione si colleghi una difesa di ceto chiaramente formulata. Studiare attraverso il caso del Larrea lo spazio politico che i letrados seppero conquistare significa dunque riconoscere le ragioni che si manifestarono nell’ambito di ogni conflitto: le linee politiche dell’équipe di governo, le resistenze dei poteri concorrenti, gli stimoli di auto-affermazione proprî del ceto.
