In his years in Rome Liszt composes a lot of a cappella choir music. His main ideal was not to connect with the long Roman tradition of sacred music, but to renovate the language. This however doesn't have to bring to the conclusion that choral musica had been abandoned by his contemporary Roman composers. Onm the contrary between the Sixties and the Nineties many valued roman composers devoted themselves to a cappella choir musica, to choral music with organ, string quartet or large orchestra accompaniment; for example Eugenio Terziani, Alessandro Orsini and others to be found in Roman libraries. This huge repertoire, totally forgotten nowadays, is worth attention and allows to better frame Liszt's and other musicisans' activity in this same field.
Negli anni della permanenza a Roma, Liszt compone a più riprese musica per coro a cappella. Nelle sue intenzioni non prevale l’idea di riallacciarsi a una presunta o reale tradizione secolare di musica sacra romana, ma quella di un rinnovamento del linguaggio. Liszt si muove quindi autonomamente da tradizioni o volontà storicistiche. Ciò tuttavia non deve portare alla conclusione che la musica corale fosse abbandonata dai compositori romani coevi. Anzi fra anni Sessanta e Novanta dell’Ottocento molti validissimi compositori romani dedicarono ampio spazio alla musica per coro a cappella o con accompagnamento di organo, di quartetto, o di grande orchestra; fra essi, per esempio, Eugenio Terziani, Alessandro Orsini ed altri presenti nelle biblioteche romane. Questo ampio repertorio, oggi del tutto dimenticato, merita attenzione e permette di meglio inquadrare l’attività di Liszt e di altri musicisti forerstieri allora attivi in Italia in questo stesso campo.
