The book scrutinizes a particular aspect of multiculturalism, the so-called paradox of multicultural accommodations: cultural rights can provoke high costs for vulnerable members within minorities (id est women and children), if we don’t pay due attention to the close connection between inter-group and intra-group relationships. Every claim to uphold or exempt minority lifestyles and their relevant traditional practices should be assessed under the following parameter: How are power relations inside the relevant minority negotiated and how are they affected by minority/majority conflicts? Who represents group identity claims outside the community and on behalf of all members? Appreciating cultural diversity and minority membership also means evaluating different power-structures and roles inside cultural communities (like immigrants groups, religious minorities or indigenous tribes). We should evaluate the way multicultural accommodations can reinforce internal inequalities and power.
