The Summer School Homelands in Translation flows together with another event promoted by “L’Orientale” University and realized thanks to the partnership of the Universities of Halle - Oxford - Copenhagen and Federico II of Naples: a biennial summer school started two years ago in Halle that is going to be hosted by all the universities that are partners in this project. This Summer School inquires issues related to the cultural translation of the concepts of homeland and nation. These are terms at a first look might seem to be based only to the different local identities and for this reason might be wrongly considered as untranslatable. Translation is then the keyword: a term that includes a vast area of research and that is particularly rooted in the tradition of studies of University of Halle. Studying translation means studying the migration of epistemic elements and normative systems as well as their relocation and reception in new contexts. That’s why Translation is a term that can’t be but very interesting to us all. As for the content of this Summer School, there have been some theoretical studies such us translation and cultural identity, the concept of Heimat and intercultural problems today, the relationship between margins and centers, the concept of insularity, the center-periphery relations. These have been followed by a series of meetings dedicated to specific aspects of the problem such us the concept of Heimat in Germany, the idea of homeland and nation in Italy and many distinctive features of different countries. The main topics were: political space and mythical space, aspects of Islamic thought, Istanbul as a multilingual country; Uzbekistan between sovietism and tradition; the dialectic between traditional identities and contemporary identity in the Horn of Africa; the return of the concept of Heimat in the Former Central Europe; analysis of the “metaphysics of the homeland " in relation to the Jewish culture and its idea of its own uniqueness. Many have been the references to the contemporary world: about migration, citizenship, and the so-called “travelling concepts”.
