This chapter engages with the most important moments in women’s political movements and in feminist theoretical reflections between the Great war and the end of the second world war. Different forms of female association are analysed in relation to the great events of the period – the wars, the advent of totalitarianisms, resistance struggles. The conceptual developments of the feminist debate are also explored, focusing in particular on the passage from claims to equality – underlying the suffragist movement – to the valorisation of difference. The figure of Virginia Woolf is central to this reconstruction. In her feminist pamphlets, A Room of One’s Own and Three Guineas, she creates precious interpretive instruments destined to exercise a profound influence on feminist political action in the following generations, in particular on the so-called "second wave". The chapter ends with an anthological section and an annotated bibliography.
