Abstract

During the sixteenth and seventeenth century there was, in various towns of the Papal States, a slow process of economic marginalization of the smaller towns, which only escaped thanks to the particular realities privileged baronial. Not only are the small towns, but also larger cities, in most cases, were scaled by legislation that relegated to the status of the community. This trend can be assimilated to the case of Sutri, as similarly, a first survey in the documentation notary and cadastral sutrina concerning urban and regional structures do not always seem to reflect this decline. The contribution highlights how, between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the land ownership of households sutrine proved to be consistent and so the development of manufacturing activities in the territory, peculiarly exemplified by the family ironworks Altoviti. A trend that had a positive impact over the area and its consistency and densità.Lo purpose of these reflections is to check this trend, and sometimes contradictory, however, in need of extensive research in the sixteenth-century sources, through the particulars relating to the city's inferable from the cadastre of 1606 and the comparison with the data in the Gregorian Cadastre
