The chapter provides a critical analysis of the different ways several disciplines concerned with the study of music have dealt with the matter of the relationship between text and context. The chapter overviews the perspectives on the subject offered by sociomusicology, sociology of music, ethnomusicology, cultural studies, production of culture, culture of production, ethnography of music consumptions, cultural musicology. It ends with new interdisciplinary approaches, focused on the analysis of music experience and based on a pragmatic theory of meaning ethnographically oriented
