In this paper, the characteristics of the relationship between small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and VC and PE investors in Italy are considered. The analysis shows that VCs are more likely to step in for firms that are younger, smaller and more endowed with intangible assets than the average. Additionally, it hints at their positive role when asymmetric information problems are of utmost importance and there is broad scope for adding value.
