Dentro o fuori la città? Il punto sulle nuove categorie interpretative della periferia urbana

Old and new peripheries. A challenge for economic geography - Suburb, in Anglo-Saxons and Mediterranean cities, has always been a topic of interest in spatial disciplines, and it has long found a definite framework within the paradigm center/periphery. Much of the explanation for the growth of new settlement areas, as well as the main characteristics of these (often seen in a negative way) could be easily attributed to the mechanism of distance and rent/distance/transport cost. Then city has shown to become free from the distance; it has grown through a «leap of scale», out in the regional and supra-regional area in terms of residences and in terms of economic activities. This paper discusses the international literature, the descriptive categories and the keys to understanding current areas of urban expansion of post-modern cities. This aim of the paper is in the belief that suburb analysis is of great scientific interest in economic geography, for the study of relationships between space, territory, development.

Vecchie e nuove periferie urbane. Una sfida per la geografia economica - Quello della periferia, nelle città anglosassoni come in quelle mediterranee, è da sempre un tema di interesse nelle discipline territoriali, che a lungo ha trovato un inquadramento certo all’interno del paradigma centro/periferia. Gran parte della spiegazione della crescita delle nuove aree di insediamento, così come dei caratteri intrinseci di queste (spesso visti in modo negativo) si poteva facilmente ricondurre al meccanismo della distanza e al gioco rendita/distanza/costo di trasporto. Poi la città ha mostrato di – 271 – potersi affrancare da questo fondamentale principio e chiave di lettura, nel momento in cui ha operato quel «salto di scala» che l’ha portata a diluirsi nello spazio regionale e sovra-regionale sia in termini di residenze che di attività economiche. Il contributo che qui si propone discute la letteratura internazionale, le categorie descrittive e le chiavi di lettura correnti, sulle aree di espansione urbana delle città post-moderne. Ciò nella convinzione che esse rivestano un grande interesse scientifico per quelle discipline, come la geografia economica, che studiano le relazioni tra spazio, territorio, sviluppo.
