In the present work the nonlinear optical properties, namely optical limiting (OL), of metal complexes based on tetrapyrrolic macrocycles as doinors are reviewed. The description of the OL properties of more than one hundred complexes among porphyrins, phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines dispersed either in a liquid or in a self-standing matrix has been carried out. In particular, the influence of all relevant structural factors on the OL effect has been systematically analysed.

Abstract
