The study involved the simulation of 4-tert-butylphenol degradation in anaerobic conditions. The effect of different toxic concentrations on the removal of a reference substrate was evaluated by means of gas-chromatographic techniques, The simulation was carried out in batch reactors operating at 37 degrees C in which the pH and redox potential were monitored. It was found that, below the methane production inhibitory threshold, the removal of 4-tert-butylphenol involves a first-order kinetic and the constant was calculated.
