In the first decades of the nineteenth century, the Aurelian walls of Rome were in the middle of a controversial dispute between the historical and humanistic culture, in this case, represented by Antonio Nibby, and that expressed by the architectural thoughts and also by the works of Giuseppe Valadier, who was more attentive to keeping the first and the second time in of renewal. Both characters were taking much interest to the ancient wall, Nibby, during a thorough text on the walls, completed the first comprehensive, systematic study of the monument, Valadier as personally involved in the restoration of the Aurelian walls. In a document from 1806 there is a restoration project from the architect himself modified thirteen years later, with plans of spending 5.884 scudi. In 1830, at the beginning of a new work phase, that would have interested this stretch, Nibby protested to Valadier's project, considering it too invasive, he underlined the importance of the ancient wall and document
Nei primi decenni dell’Ottocento le mura di Aureliano si trovarono al centro di un’accesa polemica fra i rappresentanti della cultura storica e umanistica rappresentata, nel caso delle mura, da Antonio Nibby e di quella architettonica espressa dal pensiero e dalle opere di Giuseppe Valadier. Più attenti alla conservazione si dimostrarono i primi, più volti all'intervento di rinnovamento i secondi. Seguire l'evoluzione del progetto di Valadier per il restauro delle mura di Roma e, contestualmente, le critiche sollevate da Nibby, permette di ricostruire il dibattito in corso a quei tempi e di comprendere gli interventi realizzati. Nel contributo si dà conto anche dei vasti restauri effettuati da Virginio Vespignani sotto il pontificato di Pio IX. L'architetto della Camera Apostolica si interessò in particolare di porta Pia e di porta Salaria oltre a collaborare con Carlo Ludovico Visconti alla demolizione delle torri laterali di porta Flaminia e a restaurare ampie porzioni di cortine e di torri. Si indaga, in oltre, il rapporto fra la rapidissima crescita demografica dovuta al nuovo ruolo di capitale regno d'Italia, a partire dal 1870, che vide l’abitato espandersi, attraverso la costruzione di nuovi quartieri esterni alle antiche mura, e le demolizioni effettuate lungo il circuito di Aureliano per collegare i nuovi insediamenti con la città. Nella parte finale del contributo sono descritti i più importanti interventi di restauro eseguiti a partire dal 1900, anno in cui le mura Aureliane divennero proprietà del Comune di Roma, fino a quelli più recenti.
