The article illustrates some of the most significant innovations that characterised the European Parliament in the 1970s, with respect to its functions, its composition and its activities. The Treaties of 1970 and 1975 gave the Parliament important prerogatives concerning the Community Budget. The first enlargement of the Community, in 1973, contributed to make internal political dialectics more lively. The Strasbourg Assembly intensified its activity, seeking for example to make its contribution towards launching social and regional policies.
