Summary: “Tram–train” concept is based on adapting light rail vehicles to operate both on tramway and on railway tracks. In that way it is possible to join city centres with suburban areas, while eliminating the necessity to change transport system and the respective waiting times. The paper summarizes main both operation and vehicle technical issues that must be solved in order to develop a tram–train system, providing a through investigation on vehicle–track interaction, with particular regard to technical requirements a wheel profile has to meet in order to fit both tramway and railway tracks.

Abstract
Summary: “Tram–train” concept is based on adapting light rail vehicles to operate both on tramway and on railway tracks.
