Women in Black (WIB) is a worldwide network of women committed to peace with justice and actively opposed to injustice, war, militarism, and other forms of violence. The women wear black as a symbol of grief for all the known and unknown victims of conflicts. Their most common tactic consists of standing together at appointed times in designated public places, usually in complete silence. The groups of Women in Black in the Balkans have been especially notable. The first group of Women in Black in the Balkans was formed in October 1991 in Belgrade, Serbia. All the participants actively opposed ethnic homogenization, nationalist aggression, violence, and war.
