This introductory chapter first discusses how the diversity of carnivores contributes to the diversity of techniques available to study them. It briefly reviews the long history of the study of carnivores and then outlines key challenges in the ecology and behaviour of carnivores, and for conservation. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
