The affirmation of Classicism determined in Italy, in the metric sphere, far less revolutionary effects than in the rest of Europe. Up to Chiabrera, the Italian scenario remains dominated by hendecasyllables and septenaries, while interesting experiments in the recovery of Greek-Latin rhythms (Tolomei, Alamanni, Bernardo Tasso), and even the brilliant theorizations of G. Trissino, remain isolated experiences. This conservatism was the result of a short circuit between the demands of Classicism, naturally devoted to the acquisition of ancient forms, and those of Petrarchism, hostile to meters not authorized by the great model. Non-lyrical genres more easily escaped the obstacle, a reason for the partial success of a new meter like the loose hendecasyllable, which sometimes collected the legacy of the hexameter. The scenario, after the first failures that can be seen in the theories of Tasso and Torelli, underwent a real revolution by Gabriello Chiabrera; which, moreover, responded with his extraordinary polymetry to new demands, the effect of the increased relationship between poetry and music.
L’affermarsi del Classicismo determinò in Italia, in ambito metrico, effetti assai meno rivoluzionari che nel resto d’Europa; fino a Chiabrera, infatti, lo scenario italiano resta dominato da endecasillabi e settenari, mentre interessanti sperimentazioni di recupero dei ritmi greco-latini (Tolomei, Alamanni, Bernardo Tasso), e perfino le brillanti teorizzazioni di G. Trissino, rimangono esperienze isolate. Tale conservatorismo era il frutto di un cortocircuito tra le istanze del Classicismo, naturalmente votato all'acquisizione di forme antiche, e quelle del Petrarchismo, ostile a metri non autorizzati dal grande modello. All'ostacolo si sottrassero più facilmente i generi non lirici, motivo del parziale successo di un metro nuovo come l’endecasillabo sciolto, che raccolse talvolta l’eredità dell’esametro. Lo scenario, dopo i primi cedimenti ravvisabili nelle teorizzazioni di Tasso e Torelli, subì una vera rivoluzione ad opera di Gabriello Chiabrera; il quale del resto rispondeva con la sua straordinaria polimetria a nuove esigenze, effetto degli accresciuti rapporti tra poesia e musica.
