The work investigates the presence of historical matter and of the works of historians in ancient schools, focusing particularly on the approach of the ancient commentators, recoverable through the scholia. A chapter is dedicated to verifying whether the commentators, to explain a tragedy, looked for references to contemporary events or personalities. This interest is rarely present, unlike what happens in modern criticism. In general, ancient schools had no interest in historical method and the works of historians are used, but not as history.
