This volume follows the innovative trend created by the appearance of Vasari's Lives in Italian renaissance culture and traces its strong influence on the work of the Flemish artist Karel van Mander, who wrote the biographies of Flemish and Dutch masters from the late fourteenth to the end of the sixteenth century. It also analyzes the artistic biography as a product of its own times and as a peculiar subgenre with a specific rhetorical pattern that is adopted across Europe starting from Vasari's Lives
